Michael J. Egnal joined Flaster Greenberg this week as counsel in the real estate and environmental law department. Egnal splits his time between the firm's Philadelphia and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, offices as he advises clients on commercial real estate matters.
"I've worked on projects in Arizona and Toronto and in Philadelphia's greater metro area," Egnal told Law360 Pulse on Wednesday. "The great thing about real estate is that is where it all plays out for a business and a client. With commercial real estate I help exciting entrepreneurs build their business or create their great idea."
Egnal spent about 13 years as in-house counsel for local development firms, first in 2010 at Apex Real Estate Partners, then at Black Oak Management starting in 2015. He said this gave him "tremendous perspective" on what drives companies to make its real estate decisions, as he could see ideas gestate at earlier stages than when he worked in private practice.
"I was shoulder to shoulder everyday with the firm's leadership, having discussions far in advance of any paperwork I would receive as outside counsel," Egnal said. "It gave me an understanding of what really matters and what to look for. It has been an important part of being a well-rounded practitioner."
He moved to Philadelphia firm Shmuel Law Group LLC in January, joining the business boutique as a partner.
"The timing felt right to get back to a law firm," Egnal said. "In-house work began to feel like it had plateaued at a certain point, and I was working on projects which had become a little tedious."
Egnal said he was still looking for a firm with a large platform and the right mix of personalities and resources to support his practice, so he landed at Flaster Greenberg.
"It was great to find a place with talented colleagues where I could encounter more complex work," Egnal said. "The more conversations I had with members of the firm, the more I found Flaster Greenberg checked all my boxes."
